Embassy

Dear friends of Namibia,

Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Finland in Namibia. In these pages you find information on the many types of cooperation between our two countries and the various activities Finland is involved in. In addition, you can access relevant contact details and further information related to Finland.

It is a particular pleasure to represent Finland in Namibia. Our countries share a long history and a strong partnership originating from the 1870s when the first Finnish Lutheran missionaries arrived in the northern part of Namibia. The legacy of the Finnish missionaries in Namibia is very much alive today. They were instrumental in establishing schools and health care facilities that have paved the way to Namibia’s development. Finland was active in promoting Namibia’s independence through the missionary work and through the United Nations. The UN Commissioner for Namibia Mr. Martti Ahtisaari, who later became President of Finland and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, played a key role. His valuable input in Namibia’s transition to independence is still remembered today.

This year marks Namibia’s 23rd anniversary. Our friendship and commitment remains unwavering. Finland continues to promote development in Namibia. Our cooperation aims to enhance capacity building at various levels such as government and municipalities, universities and institutes of higher education, private sector, civil society and church organizations. In addition, we support business sector cooperation and trade promotion.

Through a special fund for local cooperation, the Embassy of Finland supports Namibian civil society in the fields of democracy, human rights, socially and ecologically sustainable development and preservation of cultural heritage. The cooperation between Finnish and Namibian non-governmental organizations is lively. Promotion of tourism between Finland and Namibia is motivated by the unique wildlife and developing eco-tourism. Namibia is a fascinating country with a rich and diverse culture worth exploring.

The Embassy of Finland offers a variety of reliable quality services for its citizens and does its utmost to assist travelers from the Nordic countries and others alike with all issues related to Namibia.

I hope you find our website helpful in finding the information you need. If you wish to receive further information, do not hesitate to contact us. We are interested to learn about new initiatives and the on-going cooperation between Finland and Namibia. When possible, we are happy to be of assistance to enhance them further.
